WhatsApp Channels emerged in the latter part of 2023, introducing a new broadcasting dimension for brands, celebrities, and public figures. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a channel post via WABetaInfo, revealed that WhatsApp Channels is gaining four significant features. The first is the addition of voice notes or audio messages, providing a fresh means of interaction for channel admins with their followers. This feature, in development since at least October the previous year, expands the communication options within Channels.
The second addition is polls, a familiar feature from WhatsApp group chats, now extending to Channels. This allows channel admins to swiftly gauge the sentiments of their audience, enabling participants to select multiple options simultaneously, as demonstrated in Zuckerberg's shared poll.
Zuckerberg also highlighted the introduction of multiple admins for channel owners, a valuable feature for large corporations and brands needing constant customer communication. Lastly, he mentioned the ability for people to add channel posts to their Status, enhancing the context of Status updates with content pulled from a channel update.
While no specific timeline for the feature rollout was provided, it's evident that they have transitioned from the beta phase. The stable versions on Android, iOS, WhatsApp Web, and desktop apps could see these features in the coming days or weeks. While most changes cater to channel owners, the addition of sharing channel posts through Status updates enhances subscriber interaction, marking a significant stride in improving engagement between brands and their customers on WhatsApp's one-way broadcasting tool.
